Receipt books for special funds, 1853-1928.

Volumes record the date, warrant number, amount, fund or funds on which the warrant was issued, and the signature of the recipient. The following funds are included in this series: Literary Fund, Sinking Fund, Board of Public Works (Internal Improvement Fund), Retired Teachers' Fund, Miller Manual Labor School Fund, and Interest on Public Debt. The dates covered are July 1, 1853-September 30, 1854; October 1, 1855-April 1, 1865; July 1, 1867-February 29, 1928.

Acts of the General Assembly passed in 1819, 1821, and 1825 provided for "clearing and improving the navigation of the James River and for uniting the eastern and western waters, by the James and Kanawha Rivers, and for other purposes."
